It wasn’t that long ago that while I was helping my husband out at a youth summer camp that I had my first random episode of vomiting. I shrugged it off and figured that I must have eaten some bad camp food. Once we came home, the episodes became more frequent until one day The frequent vomiting triggered a back spasm that was so bad that it sent me to the emergency room. The doctors at the ER could not find a cause for the vomiting and recommended that I see a specialist.
Seven different specialists later, I only grew worse. I started having all the symptoms of IBS, SIBO, abdominal migraines, and gastroparesis. Notice I said symptoms- no matter how many tests the doctors did, they could not confirm a single diagnosis. I prayed for an abnormal test result simply so I could get some answers. My doctors eventually gave up on me not knowing what to do.
During this time I was barely able to keep myself nourished and hydrated. Whenever people saw me, they knew me as the girl with the stomach issues. I made sure to know where the nearest trash can was and if I knew I was going to be in a place where no trash cans were accessible, I would carry around a cup in case I had a vomiting episode and could not get to a restroom.
I wasn’t living. I was barely surviving. I knew something had to change.
I started practicing yoga and developed my own diet through trial and error of foods that my body could handle. During that time I began to break out of defining myself by my health issues. I stopped focusing on being sick and started to focus on what my body was telling me it needed.
I realized that so much of my health issues stemmed from my stress level. Because I spent so many years operating in a stressed state, I didn’t realize how much stress I was carrying around in my body. While mentally I had processed situational stress, I was storing it up in my body and making myself sick. I spent time digging into my mindset and becoming mindful of my body and the stress stored within it. Changes started happening. My episodes grew fewer. My system regulated. My back spasms ended. I was able to keep myself nourished.
It was then that I could finally consider one thing that my husband and I had wanted… having a child. I was finally healthy enough for pregnancy and I now have two sweet little boys because I had not only found a way to get myself back to being nourished and healthy, but I could also keep my baby nourished and healthy. It was then that I realized two things:
#1- I wanted to become the very best Mama that I could be for my son (now sons)… both from a health stand point and from a parental stand point.
#2- I wanted to help others who may not be able to achieve their dreams because they are held back by their stress and possible digestive issues.
It is time we get you a clear plan forward from a yoga teacher who’s been there. A woman who’s done the trial and error work, took the risks and finally arrived at a point in her life that her health no longer holds her back from the life she wants to live with her husband, sons, and two dogs.
